Information on Unemployment in the Czech Republic by January 31, 2013

By January 31, 2013 job offices registered altogether 585,809 job seekers. That is by 40,498 more than at the end of December 2012. The number of job seekers increased by 51,720 persons compared with the same period of the preceding year. The number of available job seekers (job seekers currently available for work) was 571,892.

In the course of January, job offices registered altogether 83,505 newcomers. That is by 23,260 job seekers more than in the preceding month and by 7,794 newly registered job seekers less than in January of the preceding year.

In January, job offices registration was terminated with 43,007 job seekers. New jobs have been taken up by 26,662 persons. In the course of the above-said month, job offices excluded 16,256 job seekers due to other reasons.

A monthly increase of unemployed was registered by all 77 districts in the Czech Republic – relatively the greatest increase was monitored in districts Jindřichův Hradec (18.3 %), Domažlice, Písek and Prachatice (13.5 %), Jeseník (12.4 %), Plzeň-jih (12.2 %) and Pelhřimov (12.1 %).

At the end of January, job offices registered 274,458 female job seekers, that is 46.9 % of the unemployed in total, and 63,370 persons with reduced working capacity, that is 10.8 % of the unemployed in total.

By January 31, 2013, 35,524 school leavers with all levels of education and juveniles were registered. Thus they share in the total unemployment by 6.1 % (December 2012 – 6.6 %, January 2012 – 5.9 %).

In January 2013, job offices paid off unemployment benefits to 138,104 job seekers, that is 23.6 % of all job seekers under registration (December 2012 – 19.8 %, January 2012 – 22.0 %).

Since 1st January 2013, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs has replaced the indicator of registered unemployment with a new indicator named the share of unemployed persons. It is the ratio of available job seekers aged 15 to 64 years in the population of the same age.

By January 31, 2013, the share of unemployed was 8.0 % (December 2012 – 7.4 %, January 2012 – 7.1 %, time series - /web/en/unemployment-in-the-czech-republic). Share of unemployed same or higher than average of the Czech Republic was shown in 43 districts, the highest being in Bruntál (14.0 %), Most (13.4 %), Jeseník (13.3 %) and Znojmo (12.1 %). The lowest unemployment rate was in districts of Praha-východ (3.3 %), Praha-západ (3.7 %), hl. m. Praha (4.4 %) and Mladá Boleslav (4.6 %). Share of unemployed - women was 7.5 % and share of unemployed - men was 8.4 %.

By January 31, job offices registered altogether 33,794 vacancies. That is by 1,099 vacancies less than in the preceding month and by 677 vacancies less than in the same period of the preceding year. At present, there have been 17.3 job seekers for one vacancy at average, the highest amount being in districts of Jeseník (122.9), Havlíčkův Brod (100.5), Most (89.1), Bruntál (72.6) and Děčín (59.4). In this monitored period, there were registered by job offices 3,614 vacancies for persons with reduced working capacity that is 17.5 seekers per vacancy. In the case of school leavers and juveniles, there were registered altogether 5,526 vacancies, that is 6.4 seekers per vacancy.

Unemployment rate (EUROSTAT - ILO) was 7.5 % in December 2012.
